Our eggnog ice cream is back, with a new flavor profile and a new name: Middle West Whiskey Eggnog. You can find the custard-y ice cream in our scoop shops, in the Splendid Holiday Collection online, and in grocery stores near you.

Traditional eggnog is usually made with rum or brandy, but we’ve always preferred the flavor and warmth of bourbon whiskey in eggnog. This year, the main ingredient in the ‘nog we make from scratch is Middle West’s OYO Bourbon Whiskey, Michelone Reserve.

Jeni’s grandfather, who used to make eggnog with whiskey during the holidays, would be pleased to know that OYO Bourbon Whiskey, Michelone Reserve has a grandfatherly tie-in: Middle West co-founders Brady Konya and Ryan Lang were inspired by Ryan’s bootlegger granddad to make their latest offering.

“OYO Bourbon, Michelone Reserve joined the Middle West Spirits line-up in November of 2012,” says Brady. “It was a project that was created to honor Ronald Julias Michelone, Ryan’s grandfather. Ryan’s pap’ was a proud bootlegger who, like Ryan, was part of a line of bootleggers stretching back four generations.

“The reserve bourbon is a Master’s Blend, a technique Ryan learned from his granddad, that borrows from the barrel blending techniques most frequently found in world class scotches. We take great care to pair our straight wheat whiskey barrels with select Kentucky Bourbon barrels in order to find that unique balance between North and South.

“The Master’s Blend bourbon is a four-grain bourbon, comprised of sweet yellow corn, soft red-winter wheat, pumpernickel rye, and two-row barley. So, in essence, you have the soft and sweet roundness of a “wheated” bourbon, but with the blackened pepper-spice of a rye whiskey—two of our favorite whiskey profiles.”

Middle West Whiskey Eggnog pairs well with Sweet Potato with Torched Marshmallows and Pistachio & Honey, but we love it served straight up so we can really taste the bourbon. Brady says OYO Bourbon Whiskey, Michelone Reserve works so well in the ice cream for a number of reasons.

“It has a sweet smokiness, with notes of caramel, vanilla, coconut cream, and toffees nuts, with a supple, fruity medium-to-full body and a sweet cream, dried fruit, honeyed whole nut,  and baking spices-driven finish.

“What would pair better with eggnog than that?”

And now, here’s how we make Middle West Whiskey Eggnog ice cream in our kitchen . . .

OYO Bourbon Whiskey, Michelone Reserve and vanilla, sea salt, and nutmeg are mixed:

Egg whites and sugar, which forms the custard-like eggnog base of the ice cream, is heated very slowly (almost 3 hours) until it reaches the right temperature. Then we strain it as it’s poured, then we strain it again when it’s added into the whiskey-vanilla-salt-nutmeg mixture:

After all of that, we add the blend to the machines. When it’s frozen, it emerges as Middle West Whiskey Eggnog, an incredible flavor all by itself, or served alongside scoops of Sweet Potato with Torched Marshmallows.
